Xochicalco means “house of the flowers,” which abound despite the arid conditions of this site. Anthropologists speculate that this well-planned fortified city was situated on the top of a hill due to the political instability of Mesoamerica when it was built between 650 and 900 A.D.
We will visit the on-site museum as well as the archaeological zone which is monumental in extension including: an acropolis, granary, temazcal, observatory, sunken patio, and ball courts. There is also an impressive pyramid covered in stone carvings (bas reliefs) depicting the feathered serpent god and the Lords of Time. Xochicalco was an astronomic observation site. A lot of walking is involved in this visit, but it is well worth it.
